lucy
light that grows on you
In the age of voice assistants and personal robots we try to build relationships with our environment. However, the presence of technology makes these little companions seem to be untrustworthy.
The desire for natural company still remains.
lucy tries to fill this gap with bioluminescent creatures. While it finds use as a lamp, it offers company in the form of living organisms.
After comparing different organisms, I chose bioluminescent fungi. Due to their natural appearance and long lifespan, forming a relationship seems easier. To enhance this aspect, the mushrooms are paired with a log on which they grow.
The owner accompanies the fungi from the selection of the log and its inoculation to the end of their lives.
At the beginning of my research the aspect of ┬şelectricity-free light seemed excitin
g. However, after having observed of two fungi cultures daily, it became clear that the truly interesting thing about bioluminescent light is that it is alive.
Instead of electricity, lucy feeds on dead organic matter and therefore spreads, changes every day and grows on you.
